Rockhampton Branch – September 2023

The Rockhampton members welcomed the return of Dr Tim Heard in early September, to facilitate a one-day workshop at Central Queensland University, which was fully booked with active and new ANBA members, and guests. The practical demonstrations of log transfers, hive splits and honey tasting were perfectly balanced with the latest research, information and trends shared by Tim.
Rockhampton Regional Councilor Shane Latcham kindly opened the proceedings with the Acknowledgement of Country. Display hives, novelty hives and the ANBA li-brary were great conversation starters. One attendee, who received the workshop as a Father’s Day gift, put his newly learnt skills to work after returning home and confidently rescued a hive from a water meter box.

A special thanks to all those others who assisted in making this a memorable day.
Behind the scenes there was a flurry of activity in preparing for this workshop. It was the perfect opportunity to launch the new ANBA Rockhampton branch logo and Facebook page. We thank Gabi Sleeman, Rebecca Smith and Rob Peach for their inspiration, skills and time. Thanks to Lloyd for organising some great branded merchandise, as well as his generous donations for the raffle. A branch history has been recorded thanks to some of the founding members. Our first ever grant has been deposited in our newly opened bank account. With this, and sales of books, plants, produce, cakes and raffle tickets at the workshop, members are looking forward to using funds to further community engagement and education about native bees. But most importantly, we’re looking forward to our next relaxed catch up when we can talk about native bees with others equally passionate!
