Insect hotel installation at Rockhampton Botanical Gardens

An ongoing collaboration with the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens is proving both enjoyable and productive. The large insect hotel Lloyd constructed was installed on a memorably hot day in December, with the help of Lloyd, Garden staff and Hudson, our youngest helper. See the image on the cover of this issue.

Within a couple of hours, the Director Liz Bellward, shared a photo of leafcutter bees moving in! See image to the right.

As a feature on a central walkway, it is attracting lots of interest (see image on front cover of this issue). A suitably shady spot has also been chosen to install a new ANBA Rocky branch TH hive in the very near future. Members will be conducting the first workshop of many [hopefully] at the venue on Friday 17 February 2025 – a public invitation [ticketed], aimed particularly at engaging youth, with a focus on solitary bees and making insect hotels. In addition, the first branch-branded working hive, encased in a security frame, is now ready for installation in a Rockhampton Regional Council [who funded the project] Community Garden.
